Jay wrestlers capture pair of duals

The Sabetha High School Bluejay wrestling squad traveled to Maryville, Mo., on Thursday, Jan. 10, to match up against the Maryville Spoofhounds and the Falls City Tigers in dual action. This was the first dual action for the Jays in the second half of this year’s season.

In the opening dual of the evening, the Jays defeated the Spoofhounds 36-30. The Jays got off to the early 3-0 lead with a 6-0 decision by senior 145-pound Kamden Brownlee.

“I felt really rested going into tonight’s action,” Brownlee said. “I have been able to keep my weight down, and my energy level is good. I thought I could have wrestled better at the Rossville tournament, so I was ready to get back out here tonight and work on some things. Getting the two extra pounds for weigh in will really help for the rest of the season.”

In the second dual of the evening, the Jays matched up with the Tigers and won the dual by a 36-24 margin. In the second dual, Brownlee was the final match, and this time Brownlee sealed the win with a first period pin over Michael Wichham.

Head Coach Ricky Creek saw vast improvement in his squad this evening.

“Tonight was the best set of matches we have had all season,” Creek said. “Everyone went out and performed, and we made very few mistakes. We were focused on our offense, and despite giving up 24 points due to open weight classes we won a couple of hard fought duals. The teams we wrestled tonight had some good wrestlers, but we were dominant in those matches and this is exactly what we needed heading into the JayHusker tournament in Marysville.”
