Jay grapplers complete impressive week of action

Sabetha mixer

The Sabetha Bluejay wrestling squad hosted the inaugural Sabetha Mixer, which featured seven teams in three rounds of wrestling action. Due to inclement weather over the last few weeks, the area wrestling squads have been unable to participate in any dual or tournament action.

Sabetha offered to host the seven teams on Tuesday, Jan. 29, for three rounds of wrestling featuring 93 bouts. Atchison, Maur Hill, Jeff West, Onaga, Riverside, Doniphan West and Sabetha participated in the new format.

Junior 152-pound Colby Tinklin, junior-160 pound Walker Lowdermilk, senior 220-pound Cauy Rokey and senior 285-pound Elliott Strahm each picked up three wins on the evening.

Lowdermilk’s match against the number three ranked wrestler in the state, Kinstin Juhl of Riverside, was the highlight of the evening. Trailing 1-0 going into the final two minutes, Lowdermilk earned two points on a reversal and then turned Juhl to his back and pinned him as time ran out in the match.

Strahm continued his quest for a second state title with a solid evening.

“I feel really good physically right now, but I am not thrilled with the lack of bouts that I have had,” Strahm said. “I definitely would like to have more matches, but even so I feel really sharp. There are only three weeks left and I am really looking forward to getting down to business to bringing home another state title.”

Assistant Head Coach Hunter Howerton liked what he saw on Tuesday evening.

“This was a great night for us to get back into some good competition with several bouts in one setting,” Howerton said. “This week that we have here with three days of wrestling will get us into the competitive mindset that we need at this time of year. After this week, we go right into the league tournament, which the guys are really looking forward to. I just really like where we are right now.”

Herington Jamboree

The Sabetha Bluejay wrestling squad traveled to Herington on Thursday, Jan. 31, to participate in the Herington High School Wrestling Jamboree.

The event featured 10 teams that the Jays normally would not compete against until the state tournament in Hays. Southeast Saline, Chase County, Lincoln, Russell, Herington, Stafford, Marion, St. Johns, Sabetha and Minneapolis comprised the field.

Senior 145-pound Kamden Brownlee continued his winning ways — picking up three wins on the evening, with all three coming by a fall.

Senior 220-pound Cauy Rokey also picked up three wins on the evening, with two coming by fall.

The remaining senior on the squad, 285-pound Elliott Strahm, pinned all three of his opponents to validate his number one ranking in the state.

“Everyone is wrestling extremely well right now,” said Head Coach Ricky Creek. “We got in some matches with kids we have not seen, and it was good for us. Walker [Lowdermilk] gave the number two kid in state all he wanted. He continues to wrestle very well.”
