Helping donors help kids
The USD No. 441 Foundation began helping financial donors help kids in 1994. Since that time, a number of changes have occurred. Naturally, when the school district became USD 113, the name of the Foundation changed as well. Within the past couple of years, in order to maximize the return on investments, the Foundation board worked diligently to move from the past investment strategy of certificates of deposit to take advantage of investments that offer increased returns.
Because of recent donor generosity, the Foundation’s funds have grown. This has also increased the amount of time and effort required by Foundation volunteers. Within the past year, the USD 113 Foundation Board decided to partner with the Greater Sabetha Community Foundation (GSCF)/Greater Manhattan Community Foundation (GMCF).
Most foundation activity involves the administration of scholarships. Because of the number of recipients, communications with the recipients and the different colleges and schools involved, scholarships are very work-intensive for foundations to administer. This partnership between local foundations allows for support in the arduous task of administration of scholarships.
The funds remain an asset of the USD 113 Foundation and are managed by Edward Jones in Sabetha, but as part of this affiliation, Edee Nichols with the GMCF will be assisting with the administration of the scholarships.
In addition to helping support the Foundation in this manner, this partnership will help with an additional need. The GSCF/GMCF will provide assistance in the appropriate administration of the funds according to acceptable non-profit 501(c)(3) protocols.
Although there have been many changes to the USD 113 Foundation over the years, what has been consistent is the positive intentions and volunteerism of the Foundation membership. These community members continue to volunteer their time, expertise and efforts to maintain a growing and thriving foundation. They give of themselves to provide a financial vehicle for donors to help kids.
