CLUB: Nemaha County Association of Retired School Personnel 3.5.19

Submitted by Lylamae Edelman

The first meeting of the new year for the Nemaha County Association of Retired School Personnel was held at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 5, at the Buzz Café with 12 members present and three guests, Amber Deters and Gil and Carol Bunning. The group enjoyed a lunch with several specials to choose from or ordered from the menu. Don Fischer gave the blessing.

The program was presented by Deters. Her program was on the classroom enhancement program sponsored by the Sabetha PTO. Items funded are products/projects to supplement curriculum, enhance the learning experience of students, impact student or their interests that are not otherwise serviced and to promote positive behavior. It is available to any certified staff working in a Sabetha school building. Application can be as an individual, grade level, content area, or entire building. Awards are given out twice per year (fall cycle and spring cycle). Deadline for fall applications are the first Monday after Labor Day and Jan. 15 for the spring applications. The PTO has various fundraisers to support the program. They did a Give to Grow Match Day, basketball taco feed and cake raffles at sporting events at the high school. Funding requests must first be approved by the level building principal and then a selection committee decides what projects will be funded. The selection is done anonymously.

Roll call was telling what we look forward to the most about the return of spring.

President Bill Kent opened the business meeting. Lyla Edelman read the minutes of the Nov. 5, 2018, meeting and they were approved as read. Edelman commented that our unit scholarship information was with the other unit awards in the September 2018 Meadowlark.  Treasurer Alice Zahner gave the treasurer’s report. Money was collected for the scholarship fund.

Volunteer hours were discussed and need to be given to Edelman by April 30.

The new District 2 director, G. Bunning, was present and shared some information on various topics and answered questions the group had.

The 2019 KARSP convention will be June 12-14, 2019, at Hutchinson.

Any retired school personnel living in Nemaha County are welcome to join the group. Dues are $20. Of this amount, $15 goes to the state and $5 kept for local unit. Dues can be sent to Alice Zahner, 385 Parkview Drive, Sabetha KS 66534.

With no other business, the meeting was adjourned. The next meeting will be held at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 7, at Buzz Café.
