Brown County Commission 4.1.2019

The Board of Brown County Commissioners met in regular session Monday, April 1. Members present were Chairman Keith Olsen, Dwight A. Kruse and Richard L. Lehmkuhl. Also present were Brown County Clerk Melissa Gormley, and Deputy County Clerk Dawn Boyles. County Attorney Kevin Hill was present for a portion of the meeting.

Olsen opened the meeting at 8:10 a.m. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all. Jim Farris led the meeting with a prayer.

Logan Bausch and Martha Smith with Northeast Kansas Environmental Services, and Chastity Schuman with Brown County Health Department, updated the commission on the Brown County NEK Environmental Activities.

Positions

The commissioners held a five-minute executive session on non-elected personnel with the three commissioners and Manuel Martinez.

The commissioners decided to move Manuel Martinez to the head janitor position with pay starting at $17.75 per hour. Martinez will hold the position on a trial period of six months, and the Commission will reevaluate at that time.

The commissioners decided to hire James Stuart as the new Emergency Management Director with a base salary of $40,000.

The commissioners held a 15-minute executive session on non-elected personnel with the three commissioners and the interviewee present. No binding action was taken.

Dwight Kruse made a motion to offer the janitor position to Ben Walker. Keith Olsen seconded. Motion carried. Lehmkuhl abstained from the vote.

Also at the meeting:

The commission presented Alvin Siebenmorgen with a plaque of appreciation for his 21 years of service.

The commissioners approve the minutes of the Friday, March 29, regular meeting.

The next regular meeting was held Monday, April 8. These minutes were not available at The Herald’s press time.
