City approves zoning ordinance
The Sabetha City Commission met at 6 p.m. Monday, April 8. Present were Mayor Doug Clark, Commissioners Norm Schmitt, Nick Aberle, Maridel Wittmer and Julie Burenheide. Also present were Assistant City Administrator Bill Shroyer and City Clerk Steve Compo.
Ordinance No. 1538 was reviewed and approved, amending the City of Sabetha zoning regulations, including extension into the extraterritorial jurisdiction in Brown and Nemaha counties as recommended by the Planning Commission. A committee will be formed by the Planning Commission to advise them on property issues in the townships with township board representation.
Brown County Healthcare sales tax
Attorney Martin Mishler was present and said that he is looking into what is happening in Brown County with the resolution they have adopted regarding healthcare sales tax.
“There are two different statutes which have some conflicting provisions about sales tax for healthcare purposes,” Mishler said. “We are asking the attorney general to look at these two statutes to determine if this is legal if it passes.”
Mishler said he felt like it probably would be legal, and that leaves the decision up to the voters.
Also at the meeting:
Mayor Clark reminded commissioners about Sabetha High School government projects to be presented on April 24.
Commissioners approved Wage Resolution No. 2019-05 for summer help, and minutes from the March 25 and the April 2 special meetings.
The next commission meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Monday, April 22.
