‘Meeting Room’ is completed
Another phase of the re-imagining of what was once the Sabetha Armory — and is now The Main Event — is completed. Now, the western room at the The Main Event has been dubbed Meeting Room on Main, and is available for smaller events and meetings.
The new, more intimate space can accommodate 60 to 80 guests. It includes a serving area; kitchenette with a refrigerator, microwave, sink and shelving; and two restrooms. It is outfitted with tables and chairs, as well.
The room was designed by Alexa Menold Keim, a Sabetha High School alumna and current interior design student at Kansas State University.
“The committee is excited about this modern and unique room,” said Kathy Simpson, member of The Main Event committee.
The space can be rented separately or in conjunction with the large event room. Meeting Room on Main rents for $75 per five hours, or $150 per day. The Main Event large space rents for $150 per day or $450 for four days. To rent the entire venue for four days, the price is $600. Rentals are scheduled through the City of Sabetha, by calling 785-284-2158.
The City of Sabetha acquired the Sabetha Armory — now called The Main Event — in 2010. At that time, the city approved the suggestion of turning the building into an event space. A committee was appointed to move forward with turning this dream into reality.
“Since that time, it has proven to not only be a gathering space for Sabethans but also an attractive venue to bring guests to our city,” Simpson said.
Through a series of fundraising efforts, grants and donations from numerous businesses and individuals, four phases of renovation have been undertaken at the event facility.
In the first phase, renovations included installation of sufficient heating and cooling to control the internal climate, and creation of a large catering kitchen capable of serving large events. The kitchen cost totaled $25,000. A grant was acquired to pay for the heating and cooling.
In the second phase, main room acoustics were enhanced at a cost of $17,000.
In the third phase, renovations included enhancing the building’s curb appeals, while also acquiring a portable bar and backdrop. This was a phase noticeable to the public at large, as it created a new handicap accessible entrance, signage wall and glass front entrance that made a statement. Total costs for this phase were $75,000.
In the fourth phase, the “Meeting Room on Main” was completed. Cost of this phase was $108,000.
In the next phase, the goal is to replace the existing older chairs that are available to those who rent the building.
Currently, The Main Event committee includes Amy Allen, Nadine Champlin, Valerie Keim, Betty Niehues, Kathy Simpson and Julie Wenger.
