Lady Jays fall to Thunder

The Sabetha Lady Jays met up with the Nemaha Central Thunder for a rival double header on Monday, April 15, in Sabetha. After both games went back and forth, Sabetha would end up losing 18-13 in the first and 19-15 in the second.

Game one

The first rival contest started off with both teams getting on the board in the first inning with Sabetha leading 3-2. The Lady Jays extended their lead in the second by four runs, which included a two-run home run by junior Maggi Hughes. Both teams continued to add runs through the fifth inning, but by the end of the fifth, Sabetha was in the lead 13-8.

Seneca added four runs in the sixth and — with two outs in the seventh — the Thunder tied the game up after scoring one run on a base hit. The game headed into extra innings with the score tied at 13-13.

Both teams went back and forth through eight extra innings, each not allowing the other to score. In the 16th inning, Nemaha Central added five runs to their score, and Sabetha couldn’t collect any runs. Nemaha Central would win the first one 18-13.

In addition to her home run, Hughes also tallied two doubles. Seniors Trista Argabright and Brooklyn Bauman also collected two doubles each throughout the game, while senior Hillary Krebs added one.

Krebs took the mound for the Jays, throwing a full seven innings. She allowed 13 runs on 14 hits, while striking out two batters and walking five. Krebs was relieved by junior Rachel Kramer.

Kramer threw the final nine innings, allowing five runs on eight hits, while striking out seven batters and walking two.

Game two

After a long first game, both teams geared up for the second. The Thunder got on the board first with three runs scored in the first. They added another run in the top of the second, but Sabetha came back in the bottom of the second to tie up the score 4-4.

Nemaha Central added another run in the third and three runs in the fourth, but Sabetha came back in the bottom of the fourth to add seven runs and take their first lead of the game. The score was 11-8 heading into the fifth.

The Thunder would tie the game up in the fifth when they added three more runs to the board. In the sixth, Seneca added one run, while Sabetha added four. Heading into the final innings, the score was 15-12 with Sabetha in the lead.

Nemaha Central rallied back on offense and collected seven runs in the final inning, and their defense shut Sabetha down in the bottom of the seventh. The Thunder would win the second game as well 19-15.

Argabright and Hughes each had a double in the game, while junior Mariah Russell collected a triple.

Krebs started on the mound again for the Lady Jays. She threw three full innings, allowing five runs on three hits and walking four batters.

Krebs was relieved by Kramer, who threw the final four innings. She allowed 14 runs on 11 hits and walked one batter.

“The Bluejays fought hard in the first game — losing in a 16-inning battle with strong pitching from both Hillary Krebs and Rachel Kramer,” said Head Coach Lauren Massey. “The Jays fell in the second game as well, but showed strong offense throughout the night.”

The Lady Jays traveled to Holton on Monday, April 22. These results were not available at The Herald’s press time.
