Alumni Reunions: Morrill High School

Submitted by John E. Lehman Secretary

The 93rd annual Morrill High School Alumni Banquet was held Sunday, May 26. The Morrill Community Building was the location for all Tiger Alums to gather.

Charles Gruber (1969) called the meeting to order after a roast beef dinner prepared by Buzz Café and served by members of the Morrill Tip Top 4-H Club. An expression of thanks was made for each group. James Jenkins (1965) gave the meal invocation. All alumni members and guests began the meeting by standing and reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.

John Lehman (1964), secretary, requested approval of the minutes of the 2018 meeting which had been previously mailed to all alumni members and were approved after noting the following corrections: Karolyn Witt Chadwell (1959) and an omission recognizing Charles Livengood (1962), who also was given an award as a 2018 Distinguished Alumni. Rudy Lehman (1962), treasurer, presented the financial report, which will have an ending balance of $4,158.48 and $2,451.50 in a CD. Over $4,000 in new donations have been received this year to meet the challenge of a donor who will match these new funds for scholarships up to an amount of $10,000.

Karolyn Witt Chadwell (1959) presented the nominating committee report. The following officers were elected for 2019: President, Kenneth Herbster (1957); First Vice President, James McKim (1962); Second Vice President, William McNatt (1960); Secretary, John Lehman (1964); Treasurer, Rudolph Lehman (1962); Distinguished Alumni Committee Members, Shirley Kendall Brougher (1966), Amelia Zimmerscheid Hoffman (1956) and Glenda Grimm Rokey (1965).

Kenneth Herbster (1957) was in charge of the program. He introduced Marvin Kohlmeier – former coach and athletic director of Sabetha High School – who spent about a half hour sharing humorous “Mumblings from Marvin.”

The President recognized and thanked all veterans that had served in the US Armed Forces.

President Gruber presented $1,000 academic scholarships to the following: Morganne Kruse, Addison Huning, Anna Cochenaur, Joseph Gruber and Norea Menold. Each of them addressed the alumni members concerning their future plans of education.

Secretary Lehman thanked alumni members for their continued support of the scholarship program and encouraged that contributions continue to be sent each year. Thanks were expressed to alumni for all donations received in the recent mailing. Special thanks was given to Wanda Roush Bonham (1950) for her recent donation of $1,000 and is unable to be present this year because of health issues.  Morrill High Alumni have been challenged to increase the current scholarship fund to a level and the scholarship will be perpetual if or when the Morrill High School Alumni Association will cease to exist. A former student has offered to match contributions in the next few years, with the ultimate goal of having an ending balance of at least $50,000. Currently, there are about $28,000 in the special scholarship funds.

Rudolph Lehman (1962) conducted the Rosemary Hour. An attractive display of each deceased one’s life was assembled for everyone to view. A poem “In Memory of You” was read and a moment of silence was observed.

President Gruber thanked the City of Morrill and Chamber of Commerce for allowing the Alumni Association to use the Community Center for our meeting.

Shirley Kendall Brougher (1966) presented the 2019 Distinguished Alumni Award to Charles Gruber (1969), lifetime resident of rural Morrill.

James McKim (1962) was in charge of class recognition. Bernard Chadwell was the spokesman for the 65 year class, which had all five living members present. Larry Steiner introduced the six members of the 60-year class of 1959. The 55-year class of 1964 had six members present. Charles Gruber spoke for the class of 1969, the last 50-year class to graduate from Morrill High. Thirteen members were present, and he announced that Roxanne Roush, one of their classmates, had passed away the day of the reunion.
