Raptors open tournament with decisive victory

The Sabetha Raptors captured their opening round baseball game against Seneca in the 2019 Kansas American Legion Baseball Zone 1AA Tournament. Playing in front of a large hometown crowd at Somerset Park on Monday, July 22, the Raptors ended the contest against Seneca in six innings with a decisive 13-3 victory.

“It was not one of our best games of the year,” said Head Coach Paul Herl. “We played a sloppy game, but we were able to limit the damage when they made a run at us. When they scored a run we were able to answer with a run of our own.”

The Raptors scored 13 runs and pounded out seven hits in the game but were plagued by four errors that allowed Seneca to stay in the game.

The Raptors, the number one seed in the tournament, broke the game open in the bottom of the fifth inning with five runs to jump out in front 10-3. The big hit in the inning was the inside the park home run struck by Blake Frey that basically ended the contest. Frey also had a double in the contest and ended the game with three RBIs. Gabe Garber, Joe Gruber and Braden Mitchell each picked up a pair of RBIs in the contest as well.

Trevor Kramer was on the mound for the Raptors and pitched four innings — giving up two runs on just four hits, while striking out two and walking two batters. Braden Argabright came on in relief in the fifth inning and held Seneca in check — striking out the side in the sixth inning, and striking out four of the eight batters he faced overall.

The win moves the Raptors into the 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 24, game against Silver Lake — who defeated Marysville in the earlier contest on Monday night.

Brayden Becker will take the mound for the Raptors.
