Raptors defeat Silver lake 11-1

Blake Frey waits on his pitch at the game against Silver Lake on Wednesday, July 24, during the AA Zone Tournament in Sabetha.

The Sabetha Raptors advanced into the championship game of the 2019 Kansas American Legion Baseball Zone 1A Tournament after defeating Silver Lake, 11-1, in four innings on Wednesday, July 24.

The Raptors scored six runs in the top of the third and five runs in the top of the fourth to put the game away early. Head Coach Paul Herl said Sabetha’s experience helped them defeat Silver Lake.

“I think our experience of being on a “big stage” and Silver Lake’s lack of experience was the biggest difference,” Herl said. “They were minus a couple of players and once they misplayed a couple of fly balls, we could sense that they may have been intimidated by the surroundings. They had a pitcher who had the best stuff we had seen all year, but he had some location issues. We took good at bats and fouled off some tough pitches to drive up his pitch count. Silver Lake knew they had to make almost every play in order to win.”

Brayden Becker and Blake Frey combined to throw a no-hitter against Silver Lake to allow the Raptors to move one game closer to a trip to the state tournament. The Raptors only needed four hits to score 11 runs and were aided by Silver Lake committing four errors and walking eight batters.

Becker was on the mound for the Raptors and pitched three innings of no hit baseball while striking out seven batters and walking just one. Frey came on in the bottom of the fourth and closed out the game for the Raptors, allowing just one run on a pair of walks and no hits.

The Raptors collected just four hits in the game, with Joe Gruber knocking in a pair of runs with one of those coming off a triple to the right center wall. The Raptors scored their first five runs in the top of the third without a hit by capitalizing on errors, walks and passed balls.

In the top of the fourth, the Raptors scored five runs after two outs with a combination of three of their four hits in the game, singles by Frey and Becker and the triple by Gruber, and walks and passed balls.
