Lady Jays open season at Wamego

Senior Emily Murchison competes in number two singles during the Wamego tennis meet on Thursday, August 29.

The Lady Jays opened the 2019 season strong with a second place team finish at the Wamego meet on Thursday, Aug. 29.

Other teams attending the meet and their placings were Topeka High in first, Wabaunsee in third, Wamego in fourth and Atchison in fifth.

Head Coach Alicia Deters said the weather was a contributing factor in the girls’ performances.

Senior Rachel Kramer prepares to send the ball back over the net to her opponent during the Wamego tennis meet on Thursday, August 29.

“The heat played a part in how the girls performed,” Deters said. “Wamego is always a good meet to start off the season with.”

Representing the Bluejays and placing first in number one doubles was senior duo Kinsey Menold and Hannah Wertenberger, who defeated each team they met.

Seniors Deborah Edelman and Hannah Whittaker played in the number two doubles slot for Sabetha. They placed second in number two doubles — defeating Atchison, Wamego and Wabaunsee.

Senior Emily Murchison played in the number two singles slot and placed fourth. She defeated Wamego and fell to Wabaunsee, but did not play Topeka High or Atchison due to injury.

Senior Rachel Kramer represented Sabetha in the number one singles bracket and placed fifth. She went 1-3 on the day, defeating Topeka High.

This year’s tennis team consists of 11 seniors, three juniors, six sophomores and six freshman. Deters said, with so many seniors, it will be difficult this year figuring out teams and who plays well together.

“This year is going to be like putting a puzzle together with 11 seniors,” she said.

The Lady Jays will travel to Hayden on Thursday, Sept. 5, for their next meet.
