Lady Jays place fourth at Silver Lake Tournament

The Sabetha High School volleyball team traveled to Silver Lake on Saturday, Oct. 5, to compete in the Silver Lake Tournament along with Royal Valley, Silver Lake, Rossville, Jeff West, Chapman, St. Marys and Perry-Lecompton.

Sabetha began in pool play with Chapman, St. Marys and Perry-Lecompton.

The Jays defeated Perry-Lecompton in split sets — losing the first set 16-25 but winning the next two, 25-22 and 25-14. Sabetha defeated Chapman in split sets, losing the first 24-26, but winning the next two, 25-19 and 25-20. In the final match-up of pool play, the Lady Jays defeated St. Marys in straight sets — 25-20 and 25-22.

With a 3-0 finish in pool play, the Lady Jays earned first place in the pool and a spot in the championship bracket. Also advancing out of their pool into the championship bracket was Chapman.

From the other pool, Silver Lake went 3-0 to earn first in their pool, while Royal Valley also advanced into the championship bracket.

In the first match of the championship bracket tournament, Sabetha fell to Royal Valley in straight sets — 17-25 and 14-25. Royal Valley went on to defeat Chapman in the championship match.

In the third-place match, the Lady Jays were defeated by Silver Lake in straight sets — 22-25 and 20-25. Sabetha earned fourth place on the day.

Throughout the five matches on the day, the Lady Jays had a serving efficiency of 95.8 percent — hitting 248 of 259 serve attempts.

Leading servers were junior Melinna Schumann, who went 48 of 48 with two aces; and senior Kinley Schuette, who went 48 of 49 with five aces.

Offensively, the team was led by senior Nikole Kuenzi with 25 kills on 76 good hits, and Schumann with 24 kills on 84 good hits.

Defensively, senior libero Maggi Hughes tallied 93 serve receive passes and 70 defensive digs. Schumann had 85 digs.

At the net, the Lady Jays tallied 16 solo blocks and 53 assist blocks. Leading blocker was senior Morgan Schuette with six solo and 17 assist blocks.
