Cardinal boys place sixth at regionals

The Wetmore High School Cardinal Boys’ Cross Country team traveled to Washington to compete in the 1A Regional Cross Country meet on Saturday, Oct. 26.

The Cardinals came away with sixth place out of 12 teams. Defeating the Cardinals were Axtell, first place; Osborne, second place; Beloit-St. John’s, third place; Valley Falls, fourth place; and Centralia, fifth place. Also competing were Tescott, seventh place; Washington County, eighth place; Linn, ninth place; Onaga, 10th place; Frankfort, 11th place; and Clifton-Clyde, 12th.

Sophomore Rasmus Nielsen led the Cardinals, finishing in seventh place and earning a trip to the State meet with a time of 18 minutes, 26 seconds.

Also competing for the Cardinals were sophomore Eric Bloom in 28th place, junior Austin Smith in 44th place, sophomore Colby Hanzlicek in 60th, senior Michael Hemenway in 83rd and freshman Kurt Shumaker in 84th.

Nielson will compete at the Class 1A State meet at 11:45 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 2, at the Wamego Country Club.
