Class 1A Votes to split into two divisions for postseason
Submitted by Jeremy Holaday
Following a ballot vote by member schools of the Kansas State High School Activities Association, Class 1A postseason competition in volleyball, basketball and scholars bowl again will be split into two divisions — effective with the 2020-21 school year.
With 117 votes cast, 70 schools or 59.83 percent voted yes to split into two division, while 47 or 40.17 percent voted no.
KSHSAA Bylaw Article XII, Section 4, requires a majority vote to approve changes to classifications. Fifty-nine votes were required for majority; therefore, the proposal passed.
With this change in classification, the postseason format and calendar will change. The KSHSAA Executive Board will approve the competition schedule/format at the Jan. 15-16, 2020, meeting.
According to the statement from KSHSAA, “It is premature to believe the schedule/format will return to the exact same schedule/format followed when Class 1A previously crowned two division champions.”
In 2009, Class 1A voted to split into two divisions. In 2017 during the reclassification proposal, 1A was voted to be put back together for one class.
